What is a bronchoscopy? A bronchoscopy is a check where a physician looks into your lungs with a thin, plastic digital camera tube. A fibre-optic bronchoscope is the gadget usually used. That is a thin, versatile, telescope (proven in the diagram). It's about as skinny as a pencil. You're often awake throughout a bronchoscopy, however normally are sedated and made very sleepy. It could also be uncomfortable but just isn't painful. The bronchoscope is handed by way of your nostril or mouth, down the back of your throat, into your windpipe (trachea), and down into your bronchi. The fibre-optics enable gentle to shine around bends in the bronchoscope and so the physician can see clearly inside your airways. A rigid bronchoscope (not proven in diagram) is used much much less typically. It's like a thin, straight telescope. It may be needed for some procedures and in children. It requires a general anaesthetic. Both kinds of bronchoscopes have a side channel down which thin devices can pass.
