Anaerobic exercise - the next depth, greater power version of exercise - is completely different from aerobic exercise. Underway for sea trials on 18 March, the guided-missile destroyer carried out a series of evaluations, native operations, and refresher training over the summer season and fall in preparation for her subsequent deployment. Arriving within the Indian Ocean on 5 December, the task group sailed to the Arabian Sea and took up a place south of the Iranian coast. Departing Bremerton on 4 January 1974, the warship sailed south to her new house port of San Diego, arriving there on the 18th after a brief stay at Long Beach.
